Skin Basting 101

For Skin As Smooth As Your Baby's Butt

What is Skin Basting?

Skin basting, or face basting as it's sometimes referred to, is next-level slugging, a skincare trend where you apply a thick layer of diaper rash cream to the face (or other body parts that need it!) at night to moisturize and repair the skin moisture barrier. While slugging is done with petrolatum, face basting uses a zinc-oxide based cream for additional skincare benefits. Zinc oxide has soothing properties that can reduce redness and dry skin irritation, repair the skin moisture barrier, and lock in hydration. When you wake up in the morning, you’ll have healthy-looking, glowing skin – skin as smooth as your baby’s butt!

Skin Basting Gone Viral

Face basting, or skin basting, became popular in the winter of 2023, when a dermatologist went viral on social media after sharing her hack for dealing with intense dryness that comes with winter skin. Since then, skin basting has taken the internet by storm, and many people are reaping the benefits of this skincare trend.
Skin Basting How-To

How to Skin Baste Like a Pro

  1. Start with a clean, freshly washed face. Use a headband or hair tie to keep hair off your face and prevent any cream from getting in your hair.
  2. Apply your serums, lotions and potions first, completing your evening skincare routine before applying diaper cream.
  3. As the final step of your night-time routine, use clean hands to apply a thick layer of Triple Paste to face (or hands, feet, and other body parts). A little goes a long way, so start with a small amount of diaper cream and layer on. Rub to let diaper cream soak into skin.
  4. Sleep on your back to avoid getting any diaper cream on your pillow case. If skin basting hands and feet, try covering with socks or mittens.
